Undervalued: Top 2005 Bordeaux from a Legendary Vintage
Considered even better than 2000, yet trading at prices 30% lower (see graph below), the top wines from 2005 represent a rare opportunity
There is no doubting the greatness of the 2005 vintage for Bordeaux. From Crus Bourgeois to 1er Grand Cru Classé, the wines are concentrated, deeply fruited and beautifully structured; all factors which auger well for very long lives. At the top-end, the Medoc First Growths and their Right-Bank equivalents are monumental wines. Robert Parker once contemplated the question “Is 2005 the perfect vintage?” saying he had “never tasted so many extraordinarily rich, concentrated, massive wines so high in tannin and extract, yet with such precision, definition, and freshness. It is clearly a singular vintage that should evolve into one of the great vintages of Bordeaux.”
However, a combination of factors has pushed 2005 out of the spotlight. These include the global financial crisis, deflated scores from Parker for some bottled wines (though he scored these higher in recent blind tastings), and the coming of the first great post-crisis vintage in the shape of 2009.
But the fact is, number fluctuation notwithstanding, 2005 never stopped being a great vintage. And when compared with the two other great vintages of the last decade – 2000 and 2009 – it looks surprisingly undervalued (see graph below). All these ensure good availability – even for 100 point legends like Ausone.
