Byprovning Cramant vs Chouilly igår. Ett försök att hitta likheter och skillnader mellan byarna. Om ni ursäktar språket så kommer en liten sammanfattning här:
About yesterdays growerchampagne cru challenge. Cramant vs Chouilly, 4 bottles from each village with as much juice as possible from the village and from the producers own vines. All tasted blind, only I knew which bottles were included. Roughly same age, all just chardonnay. Could we guess which bottles came from which village? Could we find any commonalities or differences? What village ”won”?
12 experienced wine tasters with various grower champagne experience took on the challenge and here’s the line-up.
Lilbert Millesime 2016
Diebolt-Vallois Fleur de Passion 2013
Dhondt-Grellet Cramant, base 2019
Bonnaire Vintage 2012
Legras-Haas Les Sillons 2014
RL Legras Saint Vincent 2012
Pertois-Lebrun Le Mont Aigu 2014
AT Lenoble Millesime 2012
All from my cellar, stored under the same conditions and luckily all wines were in good condition.
First things first, Les Sillons were voted best wine of the night with 3 votes with Bonnaire vintage just behind. Cramant as a whole got 6 votes for best wine as did Chouilly.
It was hard to find a clear dividing line between the villages, also since vintages and winemaking of course impacts the wine.
Maybe we could find somewhat higher or ’harsher’ acidity, some more tropical notes and a little more youth in Chouilly. Maybe we could discern somewhat creamier acidity, yellow plums in Cramant. But the overall conclusion was that it was a great line-up with consistent high quality wines that are pretty early in their young lives.
We had a lot of fun, great discussions and stella wines. Thanks everyone for helping out exploring the villages of CdB. Next time we will explore Avize vs Mesnil-sur-Oger. Over and out
